Dr. Jay Schnitzer Named Healthcare Industry Executive of the Year

McLean, Va., and Bedford, Mass., November 18, 2020 — WashingtonExec named Dr. Jay Schnitzer, MITRE chief medical and technology officer, its 2020 Healthcare Industry Executive of the Year, one of several Pinnacle Awards that the publication announced on Nov. 12. Schnitzer was selected from six finalists.

Over the past year, Schnitzer has:

  • Co-founded and co-chaired the COVID-19 Health Care Coalition, a group of more than 1,000 private companies working collaboratively in the name of improving healthcare delivery and saving lives.
  • Moderated the independent Coronavirus Commission for Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes.
  • Provided a calm and steady voice for MITRE’s more than 8,000 employees during the pandemic.

“Jay’s leadership during COVID has been indispensable, and he continues to drive new solutions for our sponsors and employees through our independent research program,” said Jason Providakes, MITRE president and CEO. “This industry accolade confirms his commitment to delivering healthcare innovation in the public interest. On behalf of the MITRE community, congratulations to Jay on this honor.”

The Pinnacle Awards recognize executives fostering innovation for the federal government. Schnitzer was nominated for his work addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From the beginning, I’ve had a sustained commitment to change the world for the better,” Schnitzer said in an interview prior to the announcement. “And when someone calls me and asks if I can help with a really hard problem, I always say yes. And then I figure out who can help tackle the problem and how to do it quickly. Whatever the challenge, my first act is to call up a diverse set of very smart, competent individuals and create a diverse team that will work together. The team is the real power behind the solution.”
