Electronic prescribing systems often contain both structured fields and unstructured free-text fields. The free-text fields offer physicians the capability of entering complex prescription instructions in natural language, but potentially introduce discrepancies with the structured fields. Researchers at the Houston VA Medical Center and Partners Healthcare have independently identified the nature and prevalence of these discrepancies.

TranScript aims to provide an automated system that detects and classifies these errors at the point of entry. This reduces the burden on both the pharmacists and physicians to spend time resolving discrepancies after the fact. TranScript has the potential to increase the accuracy and safety of information relating to electronic prescriptions. It will reduce the rates of incorrect medication use by alerting physicians to prescribing errors, thereby reducing rates of patient morbidity and mortality as well as saving time and money.
