MITRE’s Expertise Across AI, Cybersecurity, and Genetic Research Highlighted in Leading Publications

McLean, Va. and Bedford Mass., October 30, 2019—Demonstrating expertise across many domains, including cybersecurity, health research, and defense, experts from MITRE are regularly published in leading journals. Invited to enter the company’s annual Best Paper Competition, this year’s winning submissions included:

• Modeling data for justice.

As part of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science book series, “Artificial Intelligence for Decision Support in Administrative Adjudication,” Dr. Karl Branting, Dr. Alexander Yeh, Brandy L. Weiss, Elizabeth Merkhofer, and Bradford C. Brown explore whether predictive modeling could improve “the efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of administrative processes” for adjudication, which remains “the most common form of legal decisions in many countries.”

• Corporate pitfalls of offensive cyber warfare.

In “Cyberwar Inc.,” a chapter from “Bytes, Bombs, and Spies,” Irv Lachow and Taylor Grossman explore implications for companies that support “offensive cyber operations, including intelligence/reconnaissance, planning and mission support. Cyber contractors provide U.S. and other militaries access to rapidly evolving technologies and necessary human talent. At the same time, the use of such contractors has international ramifications.”

• AI powers new genome search tool.

Dr. Heath Farris, Andrew Scott, Pamela Texter, Marta Bartlett, Patricia Coleman, and David Masters published “TIA: Algorithms for development of identity-linked SNP islands for analysis by massively parallel DNA sequencing." With potential applications in livestock breeding and clinical diagnostics, this paper chronicles “the development of a computational algorithm to locate genetic markers within the genome that are useful for determining the genomic identity of a person.”

MITRE's Best Paper Competition

MITRE’s Best Paper Competition commemorates the late Dr. Ronald Fante, a highly respected scientist, prolific author, and MITRE Fellow who consistently encouraged staff members to publish the results of their technical work. Entries must have been technical papers published either in a recognized, peer-reviewed journal or in an edited technical book to be considered for an award.
