The Federal Aviation Administration has successfully conducted simultaneous independent approaches to parallel runways for over 40 years using Instrument Landing System (ILS) navigation and terminal radar monitoring. Parallel dependent approaches have also been conducted for many years. Recent advances in navigation and surveillance have sparked interest in reviewing the current standards for these approaches. This paper will attempt to describe the process that led to the current standards, including relevant assumptions, testing, and methodology. Future work will identify the most promising assumptions for further review.
