Spread spectrum technologies have evolved primarily in miltary and aerospace environmets, where the usual objectives are to provide resistance to jamming, multi-path and interception. Spread spectrum techniques may also have applications that fall under the jurisdiction of the FCC. In some civil applications, spread spectrum can provide communication privacy and multiple access on a transmit-at-will basis. In certain cases, spread spectrum may be a pratical, spectrum-efficient approach, although spread spectrum hardware is not currently available on a commercial basis. An example is given of a land mobile communication system using slow frequency hopping. Simulation results indicate that this technique might provide short-range service in applications when random channel access is an important feature.
