This paper, intended to support technical staff who architect enterprise-wide solutions, captures a summary of marketplace research taking place in the summer of 2010, and examines many of the commercial cloud PaaS providers in the marketplace, organizing them into general service provider categories such as development and operation platforms, database platforms, middleware and integration platforms, computational platforms, testing platforms, and billing platforms. The intent is to show the diversity and the current state of the PaaS marketplace. Some of the offerings discussed in the paper have strong brand recognition, while many may be new to the reader. Of course, the marketplace for new computing technologies is fluid and one can expect that the offerings in this paper will continue to evolve, new firms will be stood up to offer new services, and merger and acquisition (M&A) activities will have a large impact on the market.
