One of the most challenging problems in dealing with IP in large FPGA and SoC designs is the growing number of different interfaces required to connect components together. Using common interfacing leads to greater productivity and lends itself to more automation in design and verification. This paper demonstrates common interfacing techniques used on a large scale FPGA-based communications system developed at MITRE. This approach can be applied to 3rd party IP as well as internally developed IP as it leverages the Open Core Protocol International Partnership (OCP-IP) standard in addition to XML-based code generation techniques. A real-world design example is shown to demonstrate these concepts.
