Dr. Jay Schnitzer, MITRE’s chief medical and technology officer and co-chair of the COVID-19 Healthcare Coalition, was recently interviewed about the latest surge in new COVID-19 cases and variants, and strategies to reduce the risk of spread – including vaccines.
“The fact it's going back up and driven at least in part by the variants, that is of concern,” Schnitzer told anchors Seana Smith and Adam Shapiro of yahoo! finance. “I'm not only worried about the three or four or five variants we know today, I’m equally as worried about the next three we don't even know about yet. We need to get this under control as soon as possible in order to prevent the next round of variants which could be worse.”
Joining anchor Dimitri Soltis on Washington, D.C.’s WTOP, Schnitzer continued, “I see it currently as a race between getting enough of us vaccinated and the progress of the variants and the spread of the virus…What’s happening across the nation unfortunately is people are relaxing their behaviors and this is the worst time to do that.”
