An Open Call for Ideas That Will Shape the Future of Warfare

Project Meridian

MITRE invites industry leaders, innovators, technologists, and warfighting experts to share bold ideas, potential breakthrough technologies on the horizon, and unconventional concepts that could fundamentally change how wars are fought in the decades ahead.

About Project Meridian

On September 30, Secretary Pete Hegseth directed the Department of War Chief Technology Officer, Emil Michael, to initiate Project Meridian: The Future of Warfare. MITRE was selected to lead this independent initiative that will assess technologies, capabilities, and concepts needed to sustain U.S. military advantage across all future warfighting domains and secure dominance in priority areas from 10–30 years out, and beyond.

The project will examine how advances in critical technologies, emerging warfighting domains, and evolving operational concepts could fundamentally change the character of warfare. MITRE will conduct this analysis independently and at the unclassified level.

Scope

To inform Project Meridian’s analysis, MITRE is seeking ideas and perspectives in the following areas:

  • Critical emerging technologies and advanced concepts
  • New domains of warfare
  • New ways of fighting
  • Fundamental changes in the character of warfare
  • Novel warfighting concepts

Who should respond

Project Meridian welcomes contributions from across industry, including established defense companies, emerging technology firms, startups, research organizations, and innovators working beyond the traditional defense sector, as well as individuals with deep expertise in warfare and emerging technologies.

We are seeking big ideas with the potential to inform our understanding of future warfare and the technologies, capabilities, and operational concepts that could sustain U.S. military advantage 10–30 years into the future, and beyond.

Based on this review, selected submitters may be invited to participate in follow-up activities to expand on their ideas, clarify key concepts, or provide supporting evidence. These activities may take the form of written email exchanges, virtual meetings, or in-person engagements.

During any follow-up, MITRE will focus on listening and gathering information and will not share nonpublic information. Selected participants will receive additional details and instructions.
