Our Sponsors and Clients

Collaborative long-term relationships give us a deep understanding of the sponsors' evolving roles, issues, and challenges, and build our institutional memory.

Overview

MITRE manages three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) for four sponsors: the Department of Defense (Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration); the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). We believe that each FFRDC benefits from being part of an independent, not-for-profit company managing multiple FFRDCs. Additionally, MITRE's Center for Homeland Security coordinates the application of our capabilities in systems engineering and integration to support the full range of homeland security initiatives.

The FFRDCs have numerous customers that are part of the sponsor organization (as the military services are part of the Department of Defense) or are other government organizations with similar needs. For example, the FAA encourages our aviation FFRDC (the Center for Advanced Aviation Systems Development) to work for aviation organizations around the world, which allows us to share our knowledge with other countries, and vice versa, increasing knowledge of aviation systems and safety for all stakeholders. The IRS and VA have also encouraged their FFRDC (the Center for Enterprise Modernization) to work with other agencies such as the U.S. Census Bureau, Department of Health & Human Services, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, because these groups all share similar issues in managing large amounts of information and getting it to the right people at the right time.

FFRDCs are designed to develop close, long-term relationships with sponsors and customers. All MITRE policies and organizational decisions support these trusted relationships and strategic partnerships. Collaborative long-term relationships give us a deep understanding of the sponsors' evolving roles, issues, and challenges, and build our institutional memory. This historical knowledge of technology and operations is part of the value we bring to our work, in addition to objectivity and creative, cost-effective solutions. In an environment free from conflict of interest and absent a vested stake in any product line, knowledge is shared freely within the corporation.

Sponsors conduct periodic reviews of their FFRDCs to ensure the quality, efficiency, and appropriateness of the work program.
