Awards and Recognition
MITRE has received many awards over the years, for the company itself and for individual scientists and engineers. Following is a list of some of these awards: 2008 MITRE Wins Air Force Association's Theodore von Karman Award Bedford, Massachusetts, July 28, 2008 The MITRE Corporation has won the Air Force Association's (AFA's) 2008 Theodore von Karman Award. The announcement was made in a letter from AFA chairman of the board Robert E. "Bob" Largent to Robert Behler, senior vice president and deputy general manager of MITRE's Command and Control Center. The award is given in recognition of "...the most outstanding contribution in the field of engineering and science." MITRE Named to "Best Places to Work in IT" List for Fourth Consecutive Year Bedford, Massachusetts, McLean, Virginia, July 8, 2008 International Data Group's Computerworld has named The MITRE Corporation to its annual list of "Best Places to Work in IT" for the fourth year in a row. MITRE ranked fourth overall out of the 100 companies selected, placing the not-for-profit organization in the list's coveted top five spots. MITRE received additional recognition for training (ranked fourth) and retention (ranked tenth). MITRE Receives Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award Bedford, Massachusetts, July 8, 2008 The MITRE Corporation's site in Ft. Meade, Md., has received the Defense Security Service's (DSS) 2008 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award. Established in 1966 in honor of Air Force Colonel James S. Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security for the U.S. Department of Defense, the award recognizes overall excellence in maintaining a classified environment. Only 23 of the nation's 12,000 defense contractors subject to annual inspection were presented with this year's award. MITRE Receives Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award for Third Consecutive Year McLean, Virginia, June 19, 2008 The MITRE Corporation received the 2008 Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence (AWE) for the third year in a row. One of 19 metro Washington, D.C., companies to receive the award, MITRE was recognized for its commitment to encouraging overall employee health through innovative programs such as flexible work schedules and educational sessions to support a healthy lifestyle. "It's gratifying to receive this recognition from the community," said Bill Albright, MITRE's director of Quality Work Life and Benefits. "We will continue to provide the services and programs that make MITRE one of the healthiest of places to work." More than 600 area business leaders attended AWE's annual awards luncheon on June 19 in Bethesda, Md. AWE is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping companies in the greater Washington, D.C., area become great places to work. The Trailblazer Award is a partnership between AWE and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. MITRE Presented with Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service McLean, Virginia, June 11, 2008 In a ceremony held recently to celebrate MITRE's 50th anniversary, the Honorable John Grimes, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration (ASD NII)/Department of Defense Chief Information Officer (CIO), presented MITRE with the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. MITRE Named to FORTUNE's "100 Best Companies to Work For" List for Seventh Consecutive Year Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, January 23, 2008 The MITRE Corporation is pleased to announce that it ranked number 42 on FORTUNE's 2008 list of "100 Best Companies to Work For." The designation marks MITRE's seventh consecutive year on the magazine's annual list and represents a jump from number 60 in 2007. Among medium-sized companies, MITRE ranked 13. The company was also named number six out of the top ten businesses for encouraging employee work/life balance. MITRE Engineer Honored for Achievements in Airborne Collision Avoidance McLean, Virginia, January 8, 2008 Mr. Andrew Zeitlin, D.Sc., senior principal engineer in The MITRE Corporation's Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD), has received the 2007 Dr. John C. Ruth Digital Avionics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
